This pea is a very versatile pea.  High in protein and low in calories, you will find that you can use the maple pea in multiple situations from animal feed to delicious soups, stews, salads and rice dishes.

It is a pea that is more known in the middle east and is used in fruit salads there.  The origins of this pea are said to be from Lancashire England.

Grown on the farm, this field type pea is used for livestock feed (dry seeds or green forage), green manure and as a cover crop, but can also be used for human consumption.  The original seeds came from Will Bonsall and the scattered seeds project.

More common in Middle Eastern cuisine, the maple pea is slowly being reintroduced to Canadian/Turtle Island foods.  Grown more in the Western provinces, in particular Alberta.

Sow: Outdoor 4-6 weeks before last frost 1’’ deep

Harvest:  When pea pods are plump and green.
